Remote Tutoring Done Right

We used Jon for my eldest son, who is now at the United States Air Force Academy, where the admission rate is incredibly hard to get into, and we’ve used Jon again for my daughter, who’s a senior in high school. In neither case did we plan to hire a tutor; rather, we looked at their first test scores and thought that they needed some quick studying with an expert to improve those numbers, and Jon was the go-to person we were referred to. Were we glad we found him! Whether it’s his knowledge on specifically what to study for each student, the tools they need on their calculator to succeed, or the fact he’s incredibly flexible about appointments, we’ve been recommending him to every single person we know as a tutor for the ACT and SAT. When it comes to our friends, when their test scores come back, they always come up to me with a thank you for the referral, telling me that thanks to Jon, their kid’s score went up. Jon is also really good about staying in touch with a parent. His sessions are via Zoom, but he’ll provide an audio file narrative, describing how the student did in the session, and what they need to improve upon when they take practice tests with him. He will essentially triangulate where their expected score will be at each test point. I found that with each kid, their test score improves with every single tutor session. I recommend hiring him right up until the last week before the Saturday test. Jon has excellent resources to know specifically the latest types of questions on the test and what students need to know. While half the parents and guidance counselors in the world think that you can just toss tests out the door these days, Jon is the person you want to have in your back pocket. Given the fact that standardized tests are, in fact, still utilized by some of the best schools, and for those that say it’s not data used in the initial review of a student, it absolutely is at some stage. At that stage, do you want your student’s scores to be the best?

Jon worked with my daughter, a junior, preparing to take the SAT. Prior to working with her, we were undecided about her taking the SAT or the ACT. Jon took an hour of his time to sit with our family to go over the pros and cons of taking each test for a student like her. For three months, he worked with her on the Math portion of the test. He was flexible, honest, professional, and genuinely cared about the progress she was making as a student. He even took the time to work with her on time management strategies to help her manage her heavy AP course load while preparing for the SAT. His knowledge about the test was spot on, and she enjoyed working with him. Since this was her first time taking the test, she scored 780 on the math section. Jon was AMAZING to work with!!!! My son was always enthusiastic about working with him. He was able to raise his ACT math score by a couple of points with only working with Jon for a couple of months. He previously tutored with someone else for over a year and his math score did not budge after taking the exam 3x. I only wish we knew about Jon a year earlier. I had the best experience. Jon was always super accommodating and super helpful. He tutored me on the math and science ACT sections and in whatever school math I was/am taking. He is really great at explaining concepts and tricks and helping me in whatever way I needed. He always came very prepared with multiple explanations and practice problems for any math concepts I was struggling with. And for the ACT, he offered several helpful programs, videos, and quizlets that added extra help on concepts and general knowledge for the ACT.
